Unheimliche Archäologie: Interfe(a)rance(s) of the Human Subconscious
Summary
I’m working across trans-media, often in response to semi-industrial, near-abandoned, hinterland sites between times, places, and usages, with found material from that site. Their detritus, or what remains of what was there before, is a particular interest of mine, as they serve as tangible reminders of the past and catalysts for memory.
I am drawn to the remnants and traces of what once existed in these liminal spaces, as they evoke a sense of the uncanny, or what I refer to as „Unheimliche Archäologie“. This neologism refers to a present-day archeology exploring traces of discarded everyday objects shaped by interferences. These horror-objects depict the horror in the mundane, concepts of control, resistance, intervention, and interfe(a)rence. A sort of push + pull of forces surrounding our everyday lives, as seen in the relationship between consumerism and violence.
My work is driven by the desire to confront the chaotic and cruel universe without panicking by allowing myself to be taken over by uncontrollable forces and surrendering to entropy.
