Mundane Futures: Generation Zoom

MRes

Summary

'Mundane Futures' was initiated from a collaborative project with the BT Archives in High Holborn, London. Through illustrative storytelling, the work investigates the relationships between people, objects and technological tools and platforms. Due to the circumstances of the pandemic, our interaction with technology has been greatly increased, creating a sort of 'digital omnipresence'. The story follows the protagonists journey through a technologically fueled time of isolation as she comes to terms with her increasingly deteriorating and problematic relationships with modern communication tools such as Zoom, instant messaging and video-calling. These are reflective of the time in which the project took place as well as my own experiences of producing work during the pandemic. As the story progresses the focus turns to the emotional impact of feelings of loneliness as a result of these interactions, as well as understanding the individualistic experiences associated with loneliness. The work serves as a documented account of a uniquely universal experience in the form of a illustrative diary.
