Latent Ringing: Exploring the polyphonic nature of Phantom’s dissociation

MRes

Summary

This study delves into the polyphonic nature of phantom dissociation to explore the sonic elements of the past and present, highlighting how injustices and unresolved histories affect contemporary realities. Drawing on Justin Armstrong's concept of spectral ethnography, this research captures the sensory and emotional dimensions of the phantom heroine’s experience through case studies. By combining the method of deep listening with the analysis of sensitive frequencies (hybrid-Flâneuse), it underscores the therapeutic potential of sonic narration.

As a practice-based research of sound art, I am positioning myself as both a phantom and a deep-listening researcher, transforming sonic waves into polyphonic expressions of communication. Within the immersive soundscape, roaming sounds are transformed into "bells (resonators)"—a rhythmic vehicle of communication to create feedback loops of sensory experiences. The phantom's dissociated state, fueled by technological and psychedelic encounters, reveals the polyphonic nature of existence—multiple voices, perspectives, and identities coalesce.

Additional info

This guides audiences to engage in dynamic dialogues with the phantoms of natural relics through four methods: listening, tracking, gazing, and reshaping. In the phantom's chants, I explore the aesthetic narratives of cybernetic-psychedelic regression, using this medium to create a polyphonic space.

Ringing Seeds

Ringing Seeds: Hidden in the Deep Listening: A Collection of the Spectral Voices

Seed 1: Flâneuse signals

Seed 2: Ambient Signals

Twenty-first-century literary criticism and gender studies scholarship has proposed flâneuse for the female equivalent of the flâneur, with some additional feminist re-analysis.

Here, the phantom refers not only to a ghost but also to the spirit, the vital principle or animating force within all living things. The phantom becomes a diffuse structure, hinting at broader cosmic processes of decay and regeneration. She represents suppressed and silenced aspects of history and culture, appearing as a phantom figure that challenges the dominant narrative.

Ringtones layers

Ringtones layers : The polyphonic synthesis: Shaping Resonance Space

In this context, the spectral representation of ghosts aligns with the spacetime matrix and cosmic time: Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of the chronotype (originating from polyphony theory) can be connected to Asteroseismology, offering a transformation of linear time to transcend the spatial immersion of sound narratives. In this movement, I attempt to create a multi-layered sound environment using ringtones as a lead, employing frequency modulation (FM).

Viewing the phenomenon of the phantom incarnation from a spatial perspective is not only an extreme physical mutation but also profoundly addresses the proposition of time. Inspired by the Feminizing the Ghost(Zeitlin, 2016), which portrays the story of The finale of Peony Pavilion, which sanctions both the phantom heroine's resurrection from the dead and her secret marriage to her mortal lover, defends these extraordinary events on cosmic grounds: "All obeyed the logic proper to the union of yin and yang." The documentation recorded by the phantom heroine, focusing on the late Ming and early Qing periods from approximately 1580 to 1700 in China, should be regarded as the pinnacle of ghost literature tradition.

Layer2: The material resonance: Transparent diffusion

Clinging to mirrored phantoms does not yield the truth about oneself; only by facing the mirror head-on can one take the first step towards disenchantment as a subject. Wind chimes are essential Artifacts inside temples, often inscribed with Buddhist images and mantras. The chimes hanging under the temple eaves produce a crisp and solemn sound as if continuously awakening the world. To construct a dialogue, I craft wind chimes with the chanting of sutras, feeling the overlapping and interwoven rhythms.

layer3: The information resonance: Celestial resonance

Further explorations integrate concepts like Musica universalis, which posits celestial bodies' movements as mathematical formulas creating inaudible harmonic music. This harmonic resonance extends to electromagnetic waves and sonic narratives analyzed through field recording and phenomenological approaches. Cybernetic-psychedelic regression techniques will induce altered perceptions, enhancing the depth of sensory data.

Through this process, I aim to establish a relationship between the body and the world, creating an emotional space that resonates with the body through acts of wandering and searching. The voice of the phantom narrator links infinite spaces, diffusing through spiritual sculptures as a metaphor. The natural monuments for the wandering, dissociated ghosts will symbolize the transient and intangible presence of these spectral entities in natural environments. These monuments will serve as spaces for contemplation, perhaps situated in serene landscapes or ancient ruins, where visitors can reflect on the concept of dissociation and its intersection with the natural world.

layer4: The threshold resonance: The boundary of invisible.

Overall, the spiritual sculpture, as a natural monument, will attest to the elusive and unforgettable nature of dissociated ghosts in our world, inviting listeners to ponder the mysteries of consciousness, memory, and the unseen energy that shapes our perceptions.

The aural landscape shaped by the spatialised sound becomes a guide for action. The individual person moves through these landscapes, responding to cues and rhythms in the space, creating a harmonious interplay of emotional space that resonates with the body and mind. By exploring tuning, symbolic alternation, sequencing, and restructuring in a process of dialogue.

Future Prophecies to the Reflection: Links as Affect Motivation

This stance coincides with Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening. Finally, to conclude this reflection, As a reflection of deep listening, in the realm of thinking about ethics, this can be reinforced by her' practice, which she writes about, “We need to be listening in all possible modes to meet the challenges of the unknown–the unexpected” (Oliveros, 2010).

The effects suggested a contemporary treatment with electroacoustic techniques in a sonic space. The narrator's voice is unaltered and processed to appear otherworldly, as if walking through infinite fragments of memory, like the traces through the universe, and in a moment, merging with the past, the present and the future.
