Bagel's Home: Design for Dogs, Autobiography, and Visual Storytelling
Summary
A project full of love and laughs, my MRes journey has become a series of spatially-oriented storytelling experiments that follow the exciting-yet-excruciating trials of my first months with my puppy, Bagel. Using methods drawn from theatrical scenic design, wherein spatial objects are used primarily for storytelling purposes, I've created a method that I call Imaginative Scenic Design. I imagine a campy theatrical production of mine and Bagel's life together, designing the "sets" for the various "scenes" of puppyhood, including the potty training process, the trials of teething, and the excitement at this newfound relationship. Resulting in a collection of product and furniture design for dogs and their humans, I combine discourses of theatre production design, product design, and autobiography.
Post MRes, I'm taking this work into the pet care industry, using my autobiographic perspective and storytelling focus within the contexts of product design and brand identity.
Opening scene- the overture plays as a spotlight shines on our guest of honour, center stage. Bagel is our main character, and he's just arrived home. The crowd goes wild. Exeunt.
Pawticipatory Design. Thank you Bagel for the *ahem* ~contributions~ to my furniture.
Bagel shark-- hungry for thumb flesh, vicious for blood.
The outside world is a horror scene when you're a tiny sausage on your first walk. Protocol: Tush on the pavement, puppy dog eyes up at dad, air-lift home.
