Designing Moments: How Design Can Support Collaborative Engagement in Evidence-Based Medicine

MRes Healthcare & Design

Summary

Evidence-based medicine in an adaptive and life-long learning approach to clinical practice. It aims to integrate clinical judgement, best evidence, and patients’ values and perspectives in the clinical decision making process. Within this model, there are numerous opportunities for further refinement, including an expansion to a broader range of stakeholders and evidence levels. When applied to a paediatric context, these considerations only increase in scope and sensitivity.

The aim of this project is to design moments which create space for stakeholders (e.g. physicians, families, patients, researchers, etc.) to integrate evidence-based medicine more seamlessly in assessments and care plans; an approach to building confidence, and agency that shifts away from Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) as the gold standard for best-evidence.

Additional info

Research Question: What are effective strategies for supporting stakeholder engagement in evidence-based medicine, within a paediatric context?

Process: Co-creation of the the visual identify and content for downsyndromecare.ca — a resource and guideline website for physicians and families of people with Down Syndrome. This case study is grounded in two action research cycles. The first cycle involved developing the website based on needs identified from two previously conducted surveys with stakeholders. The second cycle involved identifying insights that are applicable beyond a Down syndrome-specific context. Strategies for synthesizing qualitative and quantitative survey data, prioritizing stakeholder needs, and co-designing website content will be shared.

Anticipated Outputs: Re-imagined evidence-based medicine diagram (for a paediatric-specific context); Guidebook of suggestions for how to design more moments for collaborative engagement in evidence-based medicine.

This project is in collaboration with the Ipsiroglu Lab at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (Vancouver, Canada) and associated partners.
